A ranch, the mountains, a chilly wind and a willing fun-loving couple. It was a great time photographing Melissa and Scott out in the Rockies at Rafter Six Guest Ranch. What a great group of family and friends they have.

Last name Love... married on Valentines Day and a really cool couple and family.

It was a great way to spend Valentines Day with a great couple who just know what love is. We had a fantastic time, despite a bit of cold weather during the shots outside. A really moving ceremony with just a touch of humor kept everyone enamored. The reception was fantastic with amazing decor from Ciara at Firefly Occassions. It was a real treat working with you both, and of course nothing but the best for your future.

DWF - Let's start off with a little bio, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Edward - Cool, my favorite thing:)

I have been a photographer all of my grown up life, and have photographed over 800 weddings so far. I love traveling and experiencing new places, meeting new people and learning as much about the world as I can. I have been married for almost 9 years, and have two amazing boys aged five and one. I play hockey, ski when I can and generally like a good party. I try to take each day as it comes, and don't usually get to stressed out about life. To be honest, I'm pretty much living my dream.

DWF - How did you become a wedding photographer?

Edward - I was in college studying photojournalism, and ended up mentoring with a successful studio. I worked doing all kinds of odd jobs for them including assembling albums and prints, to photofinishing and selling. I worked towards buying my first medium format camera, and by the end of that summer I was nervously shooting weddings on my own. I never thought that would be my career focus, but the more I did it, the more I fell in love with the process and the people.

DWF- Who or what inspires you as an artist?

Edward - So many people have influenced me as an artist, including Monte Zucker, Yervant, Joe Buissink, and Jerry Ghionis on the wedding scene. I love Jesh de Rox's philosophy of life, and I am also drawn to the fashion work of Richard Avedon and the weirdness and genius of David Lachappelle. I appreciate Art Wolfe landscape and natural work a great deal as well.

I think you can always learn from others no matter what level you have achieved in your own work. I am really influenced by life and the intricacy of relationships between people, which is why I am so drawn to weddings. No other single day ties the multitude of relationships people have in their lives together like a wedding.

DWF- If we needed a photographer today why would we book you? What makes you unique?

Edward - I always try to make my focus relationship based. That means I really try to get to know my clients very well, so that I can bring out the truthiness in their relationship. (Thanks Colbert.) I shoot all of my weddings with no time or location limits so that I can tell the entire story. I am easy to get along with, and have a lot of experience in wedding photography. I bring a lot of passion to what I do, and I really do want the very best for my clients.

DWF- If you had to pick a favorite "Tool of the Trade" what would it be? and why?

Edward - It is a bit cliche, but my favorite tool is "light". It really guides everything about my photography, and I try to use it as creatively as possible. Every decision I make about my lenses, flashes or otherwise is made based on the light in the situation.

DWF - Care to share your favorite photograph? and tell us a bit about it?

Edward - This is always changing, but my favorite photo right now is called "Life in Balance". It was created during a bridal session right before Christmas, and I feel it ties the mood of the couple, the light and compositional elements together very well. Tomorrow it may be something new.

DWF - How about some final words to live by?

Edward - For me this is simple. Always look forward.
Learn from the past, but don't live in it. As long as you keep moving in the direction you are aiming for eventually you will get there.

Oh, and enjoy the journey along the way.

WPPI CONVENTION AND AWARDS - 2009

I just returned from Las Vegas, where I had a great time at the WPPI ( Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) Convention. Ten Thousand Photographers from all over the world attend this spectacular event, and It was very cool just to hang out and get to know some of them better. This year I entered prints into the annual competition and was thrilled to have 7 prints win Awards of Excellence and hang in the Main Gallery! . I also did a couple very cool fashion wedding shoots while I was there, and will be posting those soon.

I had the great pleasure of photographing Amanda and Mike's wedding a few weeks ago. To say that they are a perfect match for each other would be an understatement.

They just know that they will be in love forever, and there is a simple quietness between them that tells more than words ever could. The bridal party knew it would be a great celebration and made the day that much more fun! We topped it off with a fantastic hotdog at Chien Chaud on 4th Street... Delicious.

Happy New Years!

My last wedding of 2008 was on New Years Eve. It was a great event with a very cool and stylish couple. Kristina and Matt were married in a beautiful candle-lit ceremony at the Wedding Pavillion. You can see the obvious connection between them, and the setting was magical. We took a limo downtown for some street shooting, and kudos to the brave bridal party for toughing out the cold.

Thanks so much for allowing me to be a part of the festivities, I couldn't think of a better way to ring in 2009.

Cinematic Bridal Session - Whitney and Mark

Just before Christmas, I had a great opportunity to work with the very talented team from Confetti Films on a new collaborative concept.
Cinematic bridal sessions!!
We worked with a great couple who were married last summer, and together created some stunning fashion forward lifestyle portraits and a very cool film.

It is always great to work with such fun and easy going people. Keep tuned in to see what Confetti Films and Edward Ross Photography have in store for the wedding industry... it will be unprecedented in Western Canada.

Banff Springs - Wedding Photography Workshop

By popular demand the first workshop of 2009 has finally been announced.
Together with brilliant photographer and educator Bill Marsh we will be running an intensive Wedding and Lifestyle Photography Workshop at the world famous Banff Springs Hotel. This will be a 4 day hands-on workshop focused on building the foundation for a successful wedding photography career.

All of the details will be following early in the New Year, but we will only be accepting 20 participants worldwide.

ABSTRACTICA - An art project.

Sometimes, sitting back with your kids creativity opens up completely new ways of thinking. My son wanted to play with food coloring and water, and I thought hmmmm.... what will he come up with.

Knowing that oil and water don't mix, I tried something a bit different.

Using a small bowl, we put in some standard vegetable oil, then poured a bit of water on top. The water beaded on top of the oil of course, and James (my four year old) started designing his abstract masterpeices.

I shot macro shots of the designs, put together a composite, and voila.... ABSTRACTICA was born.

Melissa&Daniel -Canmore Wedding - November 29, 2008

Melissa and Daniel were married in the beautiful Bear & Bison Inn in Canmore at the end of November. The day was so beautiful that the ceremony actually took place outdoors. Surrounded by close friends and family, it was a simple and very elegant affair.

The wind was blowing quite hard by the time we got outside, but I love to see the veil dance, and Melissa played it up perfectly.
As it got dark, we finished at a nice little coffee shop and a stroll outside.

Polar Bears for Christmas!

I always love working in the fall, because of the colors and the amazing light that happens at this time of year. Tiffany and Kyle are a really cool couple that were married in a quaint church in Inglewood. The light coming in that day was pure magic, and the day flowed perfectly smoothly, despite a bit of chilly weather. They were troopers, and we got some really cool images. We finished off with a great party at Heritage Park.

My weekend in the mountains continued with another really fun and easy going couple. Christie and Jordan are so casual and laid back and were all about just being with each other. Linh and Nguyen were married at the amazing Palliser Hotel on September 13, and had a very elegant day. Starting with the tea ceremony, followed by a couple of fun hours together and then onto the ceremony and reception. It was great to see the way these two put each other at ease, and were so comfortable in each others arms. The long veil added a great dimension to some of the photos, and the bridal party was very cooperative with some of my crazy ideas as well.

I love when all the stars align for a great couple. Celina and Dan were so much fun to work with. What a wild, fun and wacky day this was. I have never seen so many different seasons in one day. Hot and sunny, rainy and it even snowed for a while. This fantastic wedding was held at the top of the world at the Eagles Nest Restaurant at Kicking Horse, Golden.

I have been keeping very busy, ramping up for the 2008 Wedding Season, but had a really cool day in the mountains with two great couples and a ridiculous sunrise....

The day started early to catch the sunrise and a bit of morning landscape photography. Then on to Canmore for Jani & HP's engagement lifestyle shoot. Then we finished with Michelle and Dustan's ELEMENTS session at Johnson's Canyon. For anyone interested in something unbelievably cool and different, ask me about an Elements session. I love people in love... and Manuela and Peter were a shining example. From the Polterabend (where the guests smash porcelain and the couple have to clean it up)... to the log cutting ceremony, it was a lesson in how to get your marraige off on the right foot. I really appreciated how much you both meant to each other, and to your families.

It was a fabulous event at the Hotel Arts and it was a fantastic party. Hurricane was a blast.

We just missed the cold with this one.... A day before the coldest week of the year, I had the privilege of photographing Jennifer & Anthony's wedding. I just wanted to thank all of my incredible clients, friends and family for making 2007 such a spectacular year. It will be tough to top it, but I have some really cool projects and concepts for 2008... stay tuned. I am really looking forward to working with all of the cool couples that have booked me for this year, and remember to bring all of your ideas to the table... there are no rules!

This was a no-brainer for me. Michelle was gracious enough to do some bridal modelling for me a couple of years ago, and I was so thrilled that she found me for her "real" wedding. It was held at the Wedding Pavillion, and I have rarely seen such an excited bride. I had such a good time capturing your wedding memories, and I hope nothing but the best for both of you.

I met Mark and Andrea while shooting a wedding in Mexico this past spring. It was quite an honor to be asked to be their photographer for their wedding.
